Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in the Parliament on Thursday that hackers have targeted the websites of 25 central ministries and the state government in the last 5 months. Prasad told the Parliament on the basis of information given to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) that the Central Ministries / Departments and State Governments in the states of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (in May) respectively, 199, 172, 110 and 25 websites hacked. He expressed further concern that cyber attack has become a global problem since the expansion of services related to information and technology.

Prasad said, “Cyber space is a virtual and borderless world. In such a situation, sitting in any corner of the world can attack any site at any time. The government is taking several stringent measures to stop cyber attacks.

He said that the Government has set up National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Center (NCIIPC), which works under the provisions of IT Act 2000. At the same time, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team also continues to issue alerts regarding the potential dangers of cyber attacks from time to time.

In response to another question, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that according to the information available on the Reserve Bank of India portal, between April 2019 and May 2019, 115.523 crore transactions were done through Point of Sale (POS).
